Birding Hot Spots

Whitefish Point Bird Observatory (WPBO)

A designated Important Bird Area of global significance, Whitefish Point is well known by birders as one of the best sites in the country. The Point juts into Lake Superior just 17 miles from the Ontario shoreline creating a major migration corridor. Migration months (mid-March - June, and mid-August - mid-November) are the hottest times to visit WPBO. Hawk migration in spring and migrating waterfowl, owls and passerines in both spring and fall provide observers with excellent opportunities to add to life lists. WPBO is also an excellent location to see numbers of migrating loons. The site is home to the annual Spring Fling event, held on the fourth weekend of April.

Location: Eastern Upper Peninsula, approximately 62 miles northwest of the Mackinaw Bridge. Find Whitefish Point Bird Observatory
