Seney National Wildlife Refuge
A mixture of bogs, swamps, marshes, grasslands, pine savannah and forest make up the 5,000 acres of this refuge. It provides a home to over 200 species of birds and many other animals. With more than half of the area being wetlands, access by motor vehicle is limited and most of the area is closed to motor vehicles during the breeding season. However there are many miles of trails providing foot access. Access is only available during daylight hours. Hunting is allowed in some sections of the refuge during the fall, so check with the Visitor's Center if you decide to go off the main roads after September 1. A great place to visit during spring and fall migration, it is also home to many breeding birds, including Trumpeter Swans, during the summer. Specialty birds of the refuge are sharp-tailed grouse and yellow rail.
*Special Note: Refuge gates are open only from May 15 to October 15. Unless you're prepared to do considerable walking, time your visits between those dates.
