Michigan Audubon is excited to announce the launch of Bird City Michigan, a new initiative recognizing communities committed to bird conservation and habitat preservation. As part of the Bird City Network, this program celebrates cities, villages, towns, counties, and campuses that prioritize creating healthier environments for both birds and people.

What is Bird City Michigan?

Officially launched in 2025, Bird City Michigan focuses on four key areas:
Habitat – Protecting and restoring bird-friendly landscapes
Threats to Birds – Reducing hazards like window collisions and light pollution
Engagement & Education – Promoting bird conservation awareness in communities
Sustainability – Encouraging long-term environmental stewardship

By leading this program, Michigan Audubon will track bird-friendly actions statewide and position Michigan as a leader in avian conservation. Additionally, Bird City Michigan aims to introduce more people to the joys of birding while educating them on how to protect critical habitats.

Village of Roscommon: Michigan’s First Bird City

Michigan Audubon is proud to recognize the Village of Roscommon as the first official Bird City Michigan designee! This recognition highlights the village’s commitment to bird conservation, native habitat restoration, and environmental education.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Village of Roscommon as the first Bird City Michigan designee,” said Linda Smith, Director of Partnerships at Michigan Audubon. “Their dedication to bird-friendly initiatives and community engagement sets a powerful example for other Michigan communities interested in conservation.”

How Roscommon is Leading the Way

World Migratory Bird Day Celebration

  • Roscommon will host a World Migratory Bird Day event on May 10, 2025, to educate the community on bird conservation.
  • Residents will learn about seven simple actions they can take to create bird-friendly spaces at home.

Kirtland’s Warbler Awareness Project

  • The village is fundraising to create Michigan’s largest interactive Kirtland’s Warbler sculpture.
  • This project will help raise awareness about this rare and near-threatened species, which nests primarily in Michigan.
